Calling all New(er) lawyers!

Do you feel like you aren’t getting enough real-life advice from your CPD’s? These programs are made just for you.

In 2023 TLA is trying something new - an entire series of CPD’s targeting lawyers in their first five(ish) years of practice.  Join us and be part of honest and frank discussions touching on all aspects of life as a new(er) lawyer.

When and Where:  Alternating  Tuesdays at 7:00 PM, starting on February 21, 2023. Sessions will be on Zoom, with some opportunities for in-person meetups as well. (Details to be announced soon.)

What:

  • The Shingle Hangers
How to start your own firm – hear from lawyers who have done it the hard way. What does it take to start your own law firm? How do you get your first clients? When and how do you hire? What do you want to know about the first year of running your own firm?

  • Client Perspective
What do your clients really want from you? How do they choose counsel? What are their pet peeves? “Good, Fast, Cheap” – do they only want to pick two? What does it take to get repeat business? What does it take to get fired?

  • Dealing with Crisis
You wake up paralyzed. Your child or spouse is critically, or terminally, ill. Your world has ended. But your job hasn’t. You still have obligations – to employers, to clients, to partners, to employees. How do you deal with it?

  • What Partners Want
What are partners looking for, and how do you stand out? Is it better to work fast, or work a lot of hours? How many partners should you be working with? What’s the difference between a good associate, and a great associate? How do people really manage work-life balance

  • Recruiters
What role do recruiters play in the legal ecosystem? When should you reach out to a recruiter? How? Why?  What salaries are reasonable? How much variation is there between Bay Street and boutiques?  What does it mean when they reach out to you?

  • Hey, You’re a lawyer…and other ethical dilemmas
How to deal with people in your personal life who want legal advice/help and other tricky ethical issues facing new lawyers.
