Keeping up-to-date on local knowledge can help real estate practitioners better advise their clients on aspects of their property and transactions issues. Join us for a mid-day session discussing topical issues in Toronto and area, including Toronto's short-term rental regulations, heritage designations, conservation authority jurisdiction, pad parking, crane swing agreements, and common claims issues.

Annik Forristal, McMillan LLP

Annik is a partner at McMillan LLP specializing in the construction, infrastructure and development industries. She provides advice and representation in respect of project delivery, contractual allocation and management of risk, project administration, claims management and dispute resolution. A practicing engineer before she became a lawyer, Annik is well placed to provide informed, practical advice to all players in the construction and development industries. Annik is experienced in the front-end approval and permitting necessary for development and construction projects and is frequently sought after for her experience negotiating, drafting and advising on complex construction and development agreements, including custom-drafted and standard form construction contracts (such as CCDC, CCA, OAA and ACEC). She also supports clients through dispute resolution processes including adjudication, mediation and arbitration proceedings, as well as Building Code, by-law and regulatory compliance matters before the Provincial Offences Court.

Ray Leclair, LAWPRO

Ray Leclair joined Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (LAWPRO) in June of 2008 in the role of Vice President, TitlePLUS, and as of May, 2012 became Vice President, Public Affairs, responsible for government relations efforts at LAWPRO. Formerly General Counsel for the Kanata Research Park Corporation, a development company and major commercial landlord in Ottawa, Ray has practised in both major national law firms and as a sole practitioner, and was a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa Law School and Cité Collégiale instructing the French language portion of the real estate law course. He also served for 15 years as the Ottawa senior instructor for the French and English Real Estate Sections of the Bar Admission Course and member of the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Solicitor Advisory Group, Licensing Process.

Justin McLarty, Miller Thomson LLP

Justin McLarty is an associate in Miller Thomson LLP’s Toronto office. Justin was called to the Bar in 2015 after completing his law degree at the University of Toronto. Justin is a member of Miller Thomson LLP’s Real Estate Group and works primarily in the area of Condominium Law as well as Municipal, Planning & Land Development. Justin assists condominium corporations with corporate governance issues, the drafting, review and negotiation of corporate documents and contracts, and provides opinions on corporations’ rights and obligations under the Condominium Act, 1998. Justin also practices in real estate and land development matters including acquisitions, sales, financing and redevelopment.

Ian Speers, Barrister & Solicitor, TLA Board of Directors

Ian Speers carries on a legal practice located in south Etobicoke, concentrating on real property matters. Ian is the current Chair of the Canadian Bar Association Real Property Section, a member of the Board of the Toronto Lawyers Association, and an elected representative for Toronto on the OBA Council. Ian served nine consecutive term on the OBA Real Property Section Executive (2011-2020), including two terms as the executive’s Chair (2016-2018). He has chaired programmes and delivered papers at continuing education sessions presented by the Law Society of Ontario and the Ontario Bar Association. Ian currently serves as an adjunct professor in real estate transactions at Osgoode Hall Law School (2018-date), a lecturer in the Integrated Practice Curriculum components of Ryerson University’s inaugural Faculty of Law class (2020), and a part-time professor of real estate law in the law clerk programme at The Business School, Humber College (2018-date). He previously taught land transactions for three years at Queen’s University Faculty of Law (2016-2018).
