Speakers:

  • André B. Bacchus, Director, Career Development & Professional Placement Office (CDPPO), Faculty of Law, Ryerson University
    As the Director, Career Development and Professional Placement, André provides leadership in the creation and execution of strategies to develop the professional development education program and career services for Law. He develops strategic partnerships to offer placements within the legal profession across Ontario for Faculty of Law students. André provides oversight over all aspects of the Career Development and Professional Placement Office including supporting outreach and stakeholder development across the Program.

    Prior to joining the Faculty of Law, André served as the Assistant Director of the Work Placement Office at the Law Practice Program (LPP). André was responsible for working with the Profession to identify work placements throughout Ontario, as well as developing and implementing the candidate preparation and support structures to ensure placements benefit both employers and candidates. In his role, André developed and delivered a number of Professional Development sessions each year to assist candidates with application preparation, networking and outreach, in-placement success strategies and post-placement next steps. André was also a frequent panelist and guest speaker at law schools and legal conferences where he discussed the LPP and presented on topics related to career planning.

    André has also held the role of Director of Professional Development at Heenan Blaikie LLP. In this role, André was responsible for all aspects of the Toronto office's associate and student programs, as well as managing the office's orientation, continuing legal education, mentoring and review programs.

    Following his legal studies, André was admitted to the New York State Bar and worked as an Associate with the New York office of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP. Upon returning to Toronto, André worked as a Recruitment Manager for Robert Half Legal and also served as the Director of Career Services at Osgoode Hall Law School where he utilized his knowledge and experience to advise law students on their career opportunities and job search strategies. Prior to attending law school, André held various positions with the Toronto offices of McMillan LLP and Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. Over the course of his career, André has gained a wealth of knowledge about the legal industry and has gained considerable experience both in the practice of law and in the professional development community generally.

  • Alisha E. Athanasiou, Barrister & Solicitor
    Alisha E. Athanasiou is the principal of Athanasiou Law Professional corporation, and is a dedicated advocate for her clients. From general civil disputes to family law matters, Alisha endeavours to resolve her clients’ matters in a timely and cost-effective manner. Since starting her own firm in 2014, Alisha has successfully settled cases against national banks, insurers and government agencies, and in many instances without even having to commence legal proceedings. Alisha takes a client-focused and resolution-oriented approach to litigation, and relies on mindfulness practices to help balance her busy schedule. A long-time yoga practitioner, Alisha is working with other professionals to bring mindfulness programs to the Toronto bar. Since 2018, Alisha has been a volunteer tutor with the Pathways to Education Program. More recently, she launched a project that offers mindfulness sessions online, and donates it’s proceeds to local community initiatives. In her spare time, Alisha enjoys hiking, gardening, and cooking.

  • Waheeda Ekhlas Smith, Pak Smith Employment Lawyers
    Waheeda Ekhlas Smith is a Toronto employment and labour lawyer with significant experience acting for both employees and employers. Prior to co-founding Pak Smith Employment Lawyers, Waheeda practiced with one of Canada’s leading employment law firms. She has diligently advocated for clients on various employment and workplace-related disputes, including wrongful dismissal, human rights matters, and labour relations disputes. When not working, Waheeda spends time with her husband and pets and enjoys visiting new places, having lived in or travelled to four continents. Also, in her travels, she hopes to visit all 30 MLB ballparks in North America, and only has 7 more to go!
