2025 TLA Award of Distinction Recipient - Mark J. Sandler
The Toronto Lawyers Association is proud to announce that Mark J. Sandler, one of Canada’s most respected and prominent criminal lawyers, will receive the TLA Award of Distinction on March 4, 2025, at the Omni King Edward Hotel.
The award recognizes the lifetime achievement of excellence and contribution to the integrity and worth of the law and the legal profession.
"Mark Sandler is a man of many talents who has enriched our profession during a career built on integrity, dedication and intelligence," said TLA President Mark Crane. “He has been trusted to take a leadership role in public inquiries and independent systemic reviews. He has written and lectured extensively on criminal law, evidence, procedure, advocacy and legal remedies.”
A founding partner at Cooper, Sandler, Shime & Schwartzentruber LLP, Mark Sandler has practised criminal appellate and trial litigation for more than four decades. He was an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, Chair of the Law Foundation of Ontario, and served three terms as a Bencher to the Law Society of Ontario.
He has been a Commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission, was a member of the National Chair of the League for Human Rights, B’nai Brith Canada and served part-time on the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal.
Mark Sandler has been Counsel or Senior Advisor for numerous public inquiries and systemic reviews, including the Goudge Inquiry, the Kaufman Inquiry, the Epstein Review and the Robins Review. He also acted as Counsel to the Office of the Independent Police Review’s systemic review of the Thunder Bay Police Service and its relationship to Indigenous communities.
