2025 TLA Honsberger Award Recipient - Shantona Chaudhury
Shantona Chaudhury, who has excelled in civil, commercial and public litigation, will receive the Toronto Lawyers’ Association’s Honsberger Award on March 4, 2025, at the Omni King Edward Hotel.
“After serving as a law clerk to Justice Ian Binnie of the Supreme Court of Canada, Shantona Chaudhury has made a lasting impression as a lawyer including in the areas of national security and public inquiries,” said TLA president Mark Crane.
The Honsberger Award is presented to a mid-career Toronto lawyer or Toronto organization in recognition of a single unique accomplishment or ongoing contributions to the legal community and the community at large, exemplifying the association’s three pillars of Knowledge, Advocacy and Community.
Chaudhury, founding partner at Pape Chaudhury LLP, earned her law degree from McGill University. She says she was drawn to litigation by a desire to help others.
“With litigation, you can see how your advocacy affects peoples’ lives in an immediate way,” she told McGill’s alumni magazine, adding she is presented with challenging cases as an appeals specialist. “You don’t usually hire a specialized appellate lawyer if you don’t have a difficult case. There’s no other way to put it – it’s hard work! A good lawyer doesn’t find a strong answer quickly, and I go down many rabbit holes to consider all the angles and arguments that could work.”
She has acted as co-lead counsel to the Public Order Emergency Commission and was selected as lead counsel for the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions.
Chaudhury has also served as counsel in more than 40 appeals at the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Divisional Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
