2025 TLA Awards Gala

ADAM GOLDENBERG

2025 TLA Emerging Excellence Award Recipient - Adam Goldenberg

Adam Goldenberg, whose work on civil liberties cases has had a profound impact across Canada, will receive the Toronto Lawyers Association Emerging Excellence Award on March 4, 2025, at the Omni King Edward Hotel.

“Adam Goldenberg joins a long list of exceptional young lawyers to be honoured for their contributions to the law and their community,” said TLA president Mark Crane. “He is a tenacious and skilled litigator whose tireless efforts have helped improve the lives of those treated unjustly.”

The Emerging Excellence Award is presented to a Toronto lawyer in practice for 10 years or less or a Toronto organization in existence for 10 years or less who/that exemplifies leadership or innovation in advancing the TLA’s three pillars of Knowledge, Advocacy and Community.

Goldenberg is a partner in the McCarthy Tetrault litigation group focusing on commercial and public law disputes. He has been recognized for his civil liberties work, especially on cases affecting the 2SLGBTQI+ community, and regularly acts pro bono for individuals and public interest organizations. Goldenberg is lead counsel in litigation against laws affecting gender-diverse students in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan, including UR Pride Centre for Sexuality and Gender Diversity v. Saskatchewan, which challenges the government’s Bill 137 on the basis that it unreasonably limits the rights of trans and gender-diverse youths as guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

He has been counsel in numerous Supreme Court of Canada appeals, co-founded Gakino’amaage (Teach for Canada) and serves on the Leadership Council of the World Justice Project. Goldenberg has also co-authored a leading text on the Emergencies Act, hosts the Appealing Briefs podcast and frequently writes and speaks on legal topics.
