Each year the Toronto Lawyers Association takes great pleasure in highlighting outstanding contributions to our legal community and the community at large, by presenting two awards at its Annual Gala. The 2018 Awards Gala took place on March 8, 2018 at the King Edward Hotel, Toronto.
TLA Award of Distinction
The TLA Award of Distinction is awarded in recognition of the recipient's lifetime contribution to the integrity and worth of the law. He or she is recognized for individual excellence and outstanding achievements as well as his or her dedication to the Toronto community, legal and at large. The recipient is chosen by the TLA Board of Trustees.
The 2018 TLA Award of Distinction was awarded to The Hon. John I. Laskin of the Ontario Court of Appeal. Justice Laskin has been a judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario since his appointment directly from practice in 1994. He had a distinguished career as a litigation lawyer and appellate counsel spanning 23 years before joining the Bench.

The Honsberger Award
In honour of John D. Honsberger, Past President and published historian of our association, this award recognizes a single unique accomplishment or ongoing contributions to our legal community exemplifying the TLA’s three pillars: Knowledge, Advocacy and Community, by a member of the Toronto Lawyers Association in practice between fifteen and twenty-five years. It is singular in that nominations come from our membership.

The 2018 Honsberger Award was awarded to Ian M. Hull of Hull & Hull LLP . He personifies and represents each of the Three Pillars of the TLA - Knowledge, Advocacy and Community. For more than 12 years, Ian has been a generous supporter of the Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program, which is managed by the Law Society Foundation. As Chair of the Board of Directors, he personifies the Foundation's mandate: to serve the public and the legal profession by encouraging and promoting legal education in Ontario; by preserving objects of historic significance to Canada's legal heritage and by reaching out to those in need. Ian is a frequent lecturer at various law associations and the author of numerous books and articles
A call for Honsberger nominations is sent out annually in late August.  See the complete Terms of Reference.

Greg Gilhooly, author, lawyer and survivor, speaks out about criminal justice reform for victims of sexual assault. In conversation with John MacFarlane of Osler LLP, Gilhooly will discuss the changes he believes are needed to the criminal justice system to better serve victims of sexual abuse.

In his new memoir, I Am Nobody, Gilhooly provides a raw, unflinching look at the long-term effects of sexual assault on victims. He also provides a valuable legal perspective, delivering a powerful indictment of a legal system that, he argues, does not adequately deal with serial sexual child abuse or allocate enough resources to the rehabilitation of the victim.

Wine and appetizers will be served.
Registration is free for everyone.
