The TLA offers a variety of learning opportunities through our Nutshell seminars and skills training. Our goal is to support you in your dual role as lawyer and business owner by providing education sessions on current issues directly affecting you and your practice: legal trends, legislative & court decisions, as well as practice and firm management guidance.

TLA is offering Orientation and Tours of the Court Houses at 330 University Avenue, 361 University Avenue and 393 University Avenue. These sessions allow students to get their bearings before they are thrown into the fire on their first attendance. There is no cost to the program; however pre-registration is required. The new Video Conference Practice Advisory now allows you to appear using CourtCall moderated video for certain Superior Court of Justice matters in Toronto, including Civil Practice Court, Commercial List and Estates List matters. TLA will host a nutshell highlighting both the practical use of the CourtCall program by lawyers, as well as an interactive demonstration showcasing CourtCall's capabilities. This is our 3rd Annual Small Claims Court program featuring Deputy Judges of that dynamic court. Representing clients in this court gives lawyers and articling and LPP students an opportunity to cut their teeth on courtroom practice and hone their advocacy and negotiation skills. Professionalism is required in any legal matter, but especially when appearing on motions. This nutshell is a primer aimed at articling students as they begin arguing Masters' Motions. It contains lessons on professionalism, ethics and practice management. Followed by a Wine & Cheese Reception, 6:30 pm - 7:30 p.m. This nutshell is for TLA Articling Student members only. Students and new lawyers are frequently asked to write memoranda of law for lawyers and/or their clients. The ability to write an effective legal memorandum is an essential skill early in one's legal career. Learn how to improve your memo-writing skills in this hands-on program. You are encouraged to submit in advance your writing samples. Parts of some samples will be used as a teaching tool. There will also be a Q&A at the end. Full details and registration.
In our 4th annual Supreme Court of Canada roundup, our expert panel of seasoned lawyers and scholars returns to offer insightful comments about recent decisions by our top court and identify emerging trends in the areas of civil, criminal, and public law. This presentation will help young lawyers (and articling students) with timely topics such as student debt, living at home vs. renting, the smart way to use RSPs and Tax Free Savings Accounts, and how much they should save. On June 17, 2016, new federal legislation came into force creating a regulatory framework for medical assistance in dying in Canada. Legislation also came into effect in Ontario in May 2017. In this provocative program, experts will discuss the cases being considered under this legislation and provide you with a checklist of what can be done in advance of death to eliminate the need for settling an estate after death. The Advocacy Masterclass – Opening and Closing Statements at Civil Trial nutshell will provide you with the information you need to craft and deliver effective opening and closing statements. Featuring an esteemed panel of trial tested litigators, from both the Plaintiff and Defence perspective, with the additional benefit of views from the bench, participants can expect to receive invaluable insights into how opening and closing statements can be used to maximize their case at trial. Employment contracts represent an attempt to create certainty in an employment relationship; however, they will only create certainty if they are properly drafted. It is, therefore, important for drafting lawyers to understand the legal framework within which the courts operate in the employment law world. This session will provide lawyers with legal, practical, strategic and professional considerations in preparing employment contracts. Full details and registration.
Are you doing it all on your own?  Ethical issues can be difficult for the sole or small firm lawyer to deal with since there may not be the opportunity or support to talk through the challenges. Our panelists will give real-world examples of ethical issues that have arisen in their practice with other panelists weighing in on how they would handle the problem.
