Justice Laskin receives TLA Award of Distinction

The increase in the number of women arguing appeals has led to improvements in appellate advocacy in Ontario, Court of Appeal Justice John Laskin tells the Toronto Lawyers Association (TLA) gala upon receiving this year’s Award of Distinction.

We have much better gender balance than we’ve ever had,” he told the gathering. “We have diversity. Of course, diversity always strengthens our justice system.

TLA president Melanie Manchee, in her introduction, pointed to Laskin's many long-standing contributions to the law as a civil litigator and counsel to those lawyers facing disciplinary proceedings before the law society, and then later, as a justice with Ontario’s Court of Appeal for 24 years.

In particular, she noted how he likes to take the subway downtown to write judgments while sitting at a Starbucks “in a way that a non-lawyer might actually understand.”

Justice Laskin is famous worldwide for teaching advocacy skills based on the simple message to keep it focused and keep it short,” Manchee said.
